| The
first-ever Louisville Free Public Library's mini-convention
was a huge hit. Over 100 teens from Kentucky, Indiana,
and Ohio came to enjoy a day of all things anime.
The con began with our two guest speakers. A local
high school teacher presented an A to Z presentation
about Japanese customs and culture. She included a great
slide show with pictures from her recent trip to Japan.
The teens had a ton of questions for her following the
talk. The next guest speaker was a member of the University
of Louisville's Anime Club. She talked about how the
teens could start their own anime club in school and
college.
The main event was a screening of a new anime and pizza
was enjoyed by the crowd. Next up was the costume contest.
Convention participants came dressed as a number of
anime characters including Witch Hunter
Robin, Princess Mononoke, Vash the Stampede, Momo (from
Peach Girl manga), No-Face and Kamaji from "Spirited
Away", Miroku from Inu-Yasha, Hige from Wolf's
Rain, and Toru, Hanajima, and Uotani from "Fruits
Basket." There were winners in the
best overall costume and best male and female. The audience
then also tried their luck at door prizes that were
graciously donated by Bandai. The winners were thrilled
with the Wolf's Rain hats, Escaflowne t-shirts, Gundam
action figures, and everything else.
The convention came to a close with some fun games.
Participants were able to try out their chopsticks abilities
by picking through uncooked rice to retrieve as many
objects as they could in 30 seconds. Also popular was
the Ramen noodle eating contest where players were tested
on how fast they could eat a bowl of Ramen and who could
find the longest noodle.
All in all, the convention was a blast. The teens had
a great time and everyone is looking forward
to the convention next year. Thanks to Bandai for giving
us the prize support! |
